Monday, November 5th, 2007

How Hinduism views money. Part 4 of 5 articles viewing what the world’s 5 major religions say about money and debt.

According to Hindu teaching there are 4 legitimate goals.

  • Purusharthas - pursuit of money
  • Karma - pursuit of pleasure
  • Dharma - pursuit of piety
  • Moksha - Liberation from the cycle of life and death

A Hindu’s pursuit of wealth (Artha) allows for the both the necessities (Food, shelter, etc)and of comforts to improve the quality of life, while allowing for the wholehearted pursuit of the 3 other goals.

However, the 3 other goals mean that wealth should be pursued in an honest and virtuous way with due consideration to others so not to compromise piety.
